Can hair extensions damage your hair?

We recently saw a picture of supermodel Naomi Campbell, in which; it appears that her hairline is receding. This may have been possibly caused by years of improperly wearing hair extensions.

Can hair extensions damage your hair? Hair extensions will not damage your hair if they’re correctly, maintained and removed by a professional experienced hairstylist. Below are some tips to ensure little to no damage to your natural hair when wearing hair extensions.
  • Extensions should always be applied and removed only by a professional stylist who is licensed, and also certified in the method being used.
  • It is better to create many small extensions than fewer thick ones. Adding too much extension hair to the natural hair will pull and stress the roots of the natural hair. A common cause of hair loss is " Traction Alopecia," due primarily to pulling forces on the scalp hairline or "temple". This excessive tension leads to breakage.
  • Treat your hair gently and always follow the hair care guide properly.
  • Hair extensions must be replaced at least once every two months more or less depending on the method used.

I just want to add. It's important to go to a trusted hairstylist. I went to the same lady for a few years and my hair has grown so long and thick, that I no longer need to wear hair extensions. I still do wear extensions from time to time. LOL. My tip to everyone is don't go cheap to try and save a few dollars by going to a less experienced hairstylist. I know times are tough, but it could cost you a bad install or worst, hair loss.
